Santa Famiglia
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Two days ago, we celebrated the birth of Jesus. Herod is the king, and when the magi ask where the King of the Jews is, Herod feels threatened. To make certain no one takes his throne away from him, Herod sends his troops to find and kill this other King of the Jews. To save their Son, the Holy Family becomes refugees. The angel told Joseph: Pack up, take Mary and the baby Jesus and head for Egypt. Let us follow the example of the Holy Family.
Whenever I visit friends or parishioners, I often ask them how their parents are doing. And I tell them that I will pray for their parents and for their family for good health and love. Many of you who are living a family know it is not always easy. How many responsibilities and challenges parents have to deal with! Like Joseph and Mary who had to deal with the threat that their newborn Son might be killed. Then they have to flee to a foreign country. Being refugees in a strange place is not easy for the Holy Family, but they always trust in God.
Mary absolutely trusted in God by saying YES to the angel when she received the message. Joseph plans to quietly divorce Mary when he finds out she is already pregnant. But, like Mary, Joseph also trusted in the message of the angel. They pass their test by trusting in God. Their faith encourages us to follow that example when we too face tests. How can we practically trust God today? For example, trusting God might look like a family choosing patience during a financial struggle or a parent finding peace through prayer when a child is ill.
The Holy Family faced hardship and challenges when Mary was pregnant; they had to travel from their hometown to Bethlehem. Then, when Mary is about to give birth to her Son; they find no place to stay; their Son is born in a barn and in poor conditions. Soon after the birth of their Son, they face another challenge: they must flee their own country in order the save the life of their newborn son. Their challenges resemble the challenges that many of us experience in our own family lives.
This Feast of the Holy Family reminds us to follow their lives’ example of trusting and obeying God. They believed in God’s protection and guidance as they became refugees to protect the life of the baby Jesus; God accompanies them. With our families, God accompany us in our good times and in our bad, in our joys and in our sorrows, in times of plenty and in times of need. Have faith and trust in God.
Happy Feast of the Holy Family!

Pious Christmas Legends: The Robin: A small brown bird was perched on a beam in a stable in Bethlehem watching the people from many lands who had come with gifts for the newborn Child. The little bird could see the great adoration of the people as they knelt before the Babe, and was able to sense that something wonderful had happened. After a time, the visitors departed and the Holy Family settled down to rest; and the little bird prepared to sleep, too. But just as he was dozing off, he noticed that the fire, built to keep the Child warm, was dying out. Quickly he flew down and began fanning the coals with his wings. The fire became brighter until the feathers on the little bird's breast radiated the glow and showed a beautiful red. Although he grew very tired, the small bird stayed by the fire all night, fanning it to keep the blaze bright and the Christ Child warm. Since that night the robin's breast has remained a glowing red, a mark of the unselfish love and devotion shown by that bird in Bethlehem!
“Holy Family of Nazareth, reawaken in our society the awareness of the sacred and inviolable character of the family, an inestimable and irreplaceable good. Let every family be a welcoming place of goodness and peace for children and the elderly, for the sick and lonely, for the poor and needy.” –Pope Francis, World Family Day, October 27, 2013.
