jesus end times

Online Bulletin

Malachi 3:19–20a; Psalm 98 “The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.” 2 Thessalonians 3:7–12 Luke 21:5–19 The prophet Malachi sets the tone for today’s readings with his warning that one day the LORD will destroy all evildoers. Paul addresses the problem that some people, anticipating the end of the world, have stopped working and have become a burden. Jesus speaks of the persecution that awaits. But all three also give hope to those who are faithful, assuring them that they will not be harmed. As we listen to today’s readings, let us consider how we can work to increase the number of those who will receive the Son’s healing rays.

Domenica 33A Del Tempo Ordinario

Dear brothers and sister in Christ,

We are getting closer to the end of the liturgical year; the church wants us to listen to the readings that remind us about the end of time. The readings we hear today tell us about the return of the Lord. The first reading, from the prophet Malachi, predicts the day of judgment. And Jesus predicts the struggles of the end times and the persecution of his followers.

In the Old Testament, the prophet Malachi warned people the end times are coming and God will judge people. He states: “But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.” The prophet predicted the judgement of the Lord before Jesus came into this world to bring justice and mercy. Over the years, there have been false prophets, which St. John XXIII called “prophets of doom.” These prophets try to predict earthquakes and famine, wars, and destruction will happen. These are the signs that people should watch for that the end of the world is near. But whatever people try to predict; no one knows when the end of times is coming.

In today’s Gospel of St. Luke, Jesus speaks about the troubled end of times that the world will go through, and how his disciples will suffer much persecution. Jesus warns his followers not to listen to fault teaching of the fault prophets. For Christ’s sake, the followers of Jesus will be hated by everyone and betrayed even by their own families. Many might become martyrs. Jesus also assures them that while they go through such sufferings, their hearts will be perfectly at rest. The Spirit will be with them and provide them the words to speak and the power to endure suffering. Jesus wants to reassure his disciples, and us, that in all the miseries and troubles that surround us, God is on our side and loves us, and that we should not listen to those who threaten us with a fearful end.

Let us not be afraid when the end of time comes. Every time we attend Mass, we recite, “We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.” We believe that Christ will come again. We keep trusting in God, keep being a steadfast Christian, and keep bearing witness to the Gospel by loving and caring for our brothers and sisters. We hope that God will reward us when he comes again.

Have a blessed week!

Fr. Tho Bui Pastor
