Sirach 35:12–14, 16–18; Psalm 34 “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.” 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18; Luke 18:9–14. God is attuned to the prayers of the poor and lowly, of those who suffer, of those who are repentant. Their need for God’s mercy draws God’s response. Sirach echoes the psalmist, who plainly states that the Lord hears the cry of the poor. Paul, persecuted and imprisoned for his work, is confident of God’s help. Jesus tells us that God exalts the remorseful sinner who humbly asks for God’s mercy. Let us listen to God’s word, aware of our sinfulness and needfulness.

From “Madrecita” to Saint: The Miracle of Maria Troncatti
Born in Coteno Golgi, Italy, in 1883, Sister Maria Troncatti, FMA, lived with a missionary heart that led her from the mountains of Lombardy to the Amazon jungle of Ecuador. For more than 40 years, she brought healing of body and soul as a nurse, surgeon, catechist, and peacemaker to the Shuar people who lovingly called her Madrecita, their little mother.
With only the simplest tools and a deep trust in God, she mended wounds, built schools and hospitals, and reconciled families divided by conflict. Her life ended tragically in a plane crash in 1969, but her legacy of compassion and evangelization endured.
In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI declared her Blessed. The Church requires a second miracle for canonization, and in 2015, that prayer was answered. A Shuar man in Ecuador suffered a severe head injury and fell into a coma. As his family prayed for her intercession, Maria Troncatti appeared to him in a vision and promised he would be healed. His full recovery defied all medical explanation. The Vatican recognized his healing as a true miracle in November 2024.
With this recognition, Pope Francis paved the way for her canonization, on October 19, 2025. Sister Maria’s life shines as a testimony of fearless faith, tender service, and reconciliation. As she is raised to the altars, the Church celebrates a missionary who lived the Salesian spirit in the heart of the Amazon, and whose intercession continues to bring healing and hope. -Salesian Family Connections, Fall 2025.
