Online Bulletin
2 Kings 5:14–17: Psalm 98 “The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.” 2 Timothy 2:8–13; Luke 17:11–19. Today we are introduced to two special people. Both have leprosy, but this is not what makes them special. Both are cured by the Lord, but still, this is not what makes them noteworthy. No, what makes them special is that both go out of their way to return to the one who cured them and give thanks. God’s healing touch has changed their outward condition, but their grateful response is a sign of the change within, a mark of their true faith
Domenica 28A Del Tempo Ordinario
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This month we celebrate Italian Heritage. Last weekend the Sicilian Community celebrated La Madonna Del Lume. The Mary of Light is the patroness of fishermen. The community celebrated Mass at the Memorial Chapel in the Fisherman’s Wharf. Right after Mass, Fr. Tho Bui, Deacon Khoa Pham, and a good number of parishioners and guests got on the ferry operated by the Red and White Fleet Company. The pilot sailed to the Golden Gate Bridge and when we passed the bridge, the deceased’s names were read, Fr. Tho Bui said the prayer, then everyone tossed flowers into the sea to commemorate all the fishermen who died at the sea.
The legend of the celebration of La Madonna Del Lume was a storm-tossed fisherman who was guided to safety by a mysterious light shining from a grotto near Porticello. Exploring the sea cave, they found a slab of marble hearing the Madonna’s image. They carried it to town, but twice it mysteriously returned to the grotto. So the villagers left it there and built a church on the spot to protect it. It is fervently believed in Sicily that the lives of hundreds of fishermen have been spared by the intervention of Maria Santissima Del Lume.
This weekend the Italian community celebrates 157 years of Italian Heritage in San Francisco. Beginning with the Mass at 10:00am at Saints Peter and Paul.
Mrs. Pignati wrote: “Laying the groundwork in 1868, community leader Nicola Larco established San Francisco’s First Columbus Day Celebration in 1869, marking the first time in San Francisco that Italian-Americans gathered to hold a parade to honor their own accomplishments, as well as to remember the first European to cross the Atlantic Ocean, their compatriot Christopher Columbus.
The inaugural parade took place in San Francisco’s downtown, featuring the bands and marching units of Italian familial organizations. Four floats are showcased: the first hosting the statue of Christopher Columbus, the second featuring two girls representing Spain and America, the third depicting the “Santa Maria” with a sailor dressed as Christopher Columbus; and the fourth honoring Italian gardeners and their agricultural achievements. The San Francisco Columbus Day Committee is organized by the Salesian Fathers of Saints Peter and Paul’s Church in North Beach. The celebration has grown to include activities such as a formal Grand Ball, and a ceremony where a young man and woman are selected by the community to be crowned as the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, to preside over the festivities.
The parade grew to include marching units, bands, decorated automobiles and floats. The celebration lasted over three hours with thousands attending the festivities. A new Parade route starts at San Francisco’s Civic Center, travels down Market Street through the Financial District, Chinatown and up Columbus Avenue to finish in front of Saints Peter and Paul’s Church in North Beach.
During the Depression, the sponsorship of the Parade shifted from Saints Peter and Paul’s Church to the Federation of Italian Societies, an organization representing civic, social and familial Italian-American organizations. In addition, the committee elected to abolish the role of “king” of the celebration and focus the ceremonies on a “queen.”
In 1942, the celebration was incorporated into a non-profit corporation known as “Columbus Day Celebration, Inc.” A board of directors, consisting of past presidents, conducts all affairs and elects all the contributing officers.
In 1994, the Columbus Day Parade evolved into the Italian Heritage Parade in an effort to celebrate the accomplishments and culture of all Italians and Italian-Americans.
In 2018, San Francisco’s Italian-American Community celebrated its 150th Italian Heritage Parade, featuring Italian and Italian-American dignitaries, music, performances, floats, and representatives of Italian and Italian-American organizations and businesses.
In 2020, during the pandemic, the San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade goes digital with its first ever Virtual Celebration and Parade! This parade is the oldest continuous celebration of Italian-American values, culture, and tradition in the United States.” (Contributed in writing of the Italian Heritage history byMaria Pignati.)
This November 2nd, our church's 100th Anniversary is coming to an end. We will celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass at 8:45am. Then next year Saints Peter Paul School will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Let us all give thanks to God for all the graces and gifts that we received.
Have a blessed celebration!
Fr. Tho Pastor
