Habakkuk 1:2–3; 2:2–4: Psalm 95 “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” 2 Timothy 1:6–8, 13–14; Luke 17:5–10. Habakkuk, living in a time of strife and violence in his nation, cries out to God, “I cry for help but you do not listen!” How many of us have felt the same way? God appeals to Habakkuk to have faith, assuring him that faith gives hope and life to the just one. Paul tells Timothy that faith and love can be found in Christ Jesus. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples how even a little faith can enable them to work wonders. May God’s word strengthen our faith and give us the courage to trust in the Lord.

Domenica 27A Del Tempo Ordinario

Dear brothers and sister in Christ,

The Catechism of the Catholic Church #162 states, “Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man. We can lose this priceless gift, as St. Paul indicated to St. Timothy: "Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith." (1 Timothy 1:18-19) To live, grow and persevere in the faith until the end we must nourish it with the word of God; we must beg the Lord to increase our faith; it must be "working through charity," abounding in hope, and rooted in the faith of the Church…”

Today’s Gospel of Luke, focuses on two core themes: the nature and power of a mustard seed of faith and the proper attitude of a humble, obedient servant in relation to God. The disciples of Jesus request, “Increase our faith!” This plea follows Jesus' demanding teaching on the necessity of avoiding scandal and offering complete, repeated forgiveness. They felt overwhelmed by the high standards of discipleship.

Jesus' response redirects his disciples’ focus from the quantity of faith to its quality and the power of the object of that faith. The size of the faith itself is not the issue, but the genuineness of the trust placed in an infinitely powerful God. Jesus tells his disciples that parable of the mustard seed—proverbially the smallest seed known at the time. Jesus emphasizes that even this tiny, genuine spark of faith, if placed in God, is enough to accomplish the seemingly impossible, like uprooting a deeply rooted mulberry tree and planting it in the sea.

Faith is understood as a gift from God and a personal relationship of trust. It is not a magical currency to be accumulated, but an operative reality. If one has even a small, living faith, it holds the power to enact God's will. The real question is: Are we using the faith we have already been given? The very act of asking for more suggests they had some faith to begin with. To practice our faith is to fulfill our obligation of following God’s commandments.

Jesus tells his disciples another parable about the nature of the disciples’ relationship with God as one of total obligation and duty. The servant, who is out working all day, comes home and is still expected to serve the master's meal before resting or eating. The master owes the servant no thanks for simply fulfilling his necessary duties. We are called to be humble in fulfilling our duty. Everything we have, our very existence, abilities, and even our faith, are gifts from God. When we perform good works, we are not putting God in our debt or earning a reward, we are simply giving back a small portion of what we have already received, fulfilling the primary purpose for which we were created.

We are called to live our faith. To practice our faith, this weekend and next weekend our parish community together celebrates Italian Heritage month by honoring our Blessed Virgin Mary under the title “Madonna del Lume.” The ending of our Gospel points out that Christ tells his disciples, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We have done what we were obliged to do.’” (Luke 17:10) Christ is asking us to do things the Christian way: to love God and love our neighbor. And we do. We profess our faith; we live our faith. We do our duty. We are faith-filled Christians, lovingly cared for by our God.
