Wisdom 3:1-9; Romans 5:5-11 or 6:3-9; John 6:37-40. In the first reading, we are reminded that the souls of the just are in the hand of God. In Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans, he tells them that the same Holy Spirit given by the Father to Jesus, has been poured into their hearts as God’s love. In Saint John’s Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd that all who believe in him will be raised up to eternal life.

Commemorazione dei defunti

Sap 3,1-9; Romani 5,5-11 o 6,3-9; Giovanni 6,37-40.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This weekend, we celebrate two feast days. On November 1st, we celebrate All Saints and November 2nd, we celebrate All Souls. When the Church celebrates All Saints, she does not only celebrate the saints who already have a date assigned in our liturgical calendar. The Church celebrate all the saints who died and perhaps were in purgatory and went to heaven through our prayers. These saints could be our deceased loved ones.

When the Church celebrates All Souls, she prays for all the souls who are still in purgatory and she hopes that someday they will go to heaven.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches the final purification, or purgatory: 1030: All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031: The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory, especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence, we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

1032: This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore Judas Maccabeus made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead.

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.

Throughout November, the Church reminds all of us to pray and offer Masses for all of our loved ones who have gone before us. It is our responsibility to pray for all the deceased.

My gratitude to all of you who participated in our Church’s 100thAnniversary. Today, we end our celebration by offering this weekend’s Masses to pray for all of our benefactors, living or deceased, for their contributions to build this church, and for all of you who continue to support our parish community.

May God bless you all. Have a blessed week!

Fr. Tho Bui Pastor

Visit ssppevents.org/gala-100 or email centennial@sspeterpaulsf.org for more information. Above: The first Salesian Sisters arrived at Saints Peter and Paul in 1950. Up until that time, the school was staffed by the Sisters of the Presentation. “Sr. Letizia Sampo and six Sisters headed for San Francisco on August 19, 1950. The Sisters chosen for this new foundation were Sr. Anita Ferrari, Sr. Florence Bona, Sr. Elvira Lombardini, Sr. Veronica Milyo, Sr. Wilma Sanchez, Sr. Virginia Barattino, Sr. Mary Winterscheidt, and Sr. Irene Zaccagnino. About 465 students were enrolled, so two Salesian priests helped in some classes for a while until the Sisters were able to hire the necessary teachers to complete the staffing. The (Salesian) School finally opened on September 5, 1950. The playground and parking lot were literally lined with parents eager to get a glimpse of the Sisters of Don Bosco. Father Costanzo had introduced the Sisters at the Eucharist celebrated on various Sundays, but this first day of school proved very satisfying to many parents.” -”The ‘Yes’ Lives On.”
